Capital city growth ebbs

Population growth in most capital cities slowed last year, according to figures released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The new figures show that the population of Australia’s capital cities grew by.8 per cent or almost 325,000 people in the 2024–25 financial year. This was almost 100,000 people less than in 2023–24, when those cities grew by 2.3 per cent.

Room too big? Zone it

We all love the idea of open-plan living, but large spaces in the home can sometimes feel incomplete. It can also be difficult to have a conversation in one part while the family is playing in another.

Consider creating zones by adding an open bookcase to house ornaments, plants and your favourite books. The objects will help absorb sound, while the shelves offer a visual break. If you prefer a softer impact, try a low cupboard or shelving unit, topped with a couple of healthy pot plants.

Easter makeovers

With fuel shortages looming and prices rising, many Australians are planning a staycation over this Easter break. If that’s you, you might be looking for some easy jobs to do that will make a big impact on the look of your home. Here are some ideas to get you started.

- Give the front door a fresh coat of paint
- Install a new mailbox
- Replace house numbers
- Weed and mulch the garden beds
