Low and steady

The Reserve Bank voted this week to keep interest rates on hold, leaving the official cash rate at its new historic low level of .75 per cent.

In a statement announcing the decision, Reserve governor Philip Lowe noted that while the outlook for the Australian economy has barely moved over the past three months, it is expected to pick up again.

"The low level of interest rates, recent tax cuts, ongoing spending on infrastructure, the upswing in housing prices in some markets and a brighter outlook for the resources sector should all support growth", he said.

Values continue to improve

Home values continued to lift in October as lower mortgage rates and improved credit availability spurred buyer demand, property data analyst Corelogic announced this week.

Corelogic’s latest Home Value Index results show a 1.2 per cent rise in national dwelling values over the month, delivering the fourth straight month of rising values and the largest monthly gain since May 2015.

Snap impressions count

Approvals surge

Building approvals bounced back in September, according to new data released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The figures show that the seasonally adjusted number of total dwellings approved rose 7.6 per cent in September - and it's all about apartments.
