Lending down in June quarter

Investors led a drop in lending towards the end of the financial year, according to data released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The figures show that the total number of new home loans fell 5.4 per cent to 134,225 in the June quarter 2026.

Build forward, not back: GBCA

Australians deserve to live in healthy, resilient and affordable homes, the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) said this week.

The peak body welcomed the Senate Select Committee on Productivity's interim report on housing, saying it highlights the scale of reform needed to deliver more homes while maintaining the standards that make them healthy, resilient and affordable to run.

Church hall to heavenly space

For 70 years it was a Sunday School hall, now it’s an award-winning home incorporating a glasshouse and guest studio.

For her dream home, architect and designer Tessa Kingsbury kept the original barrel shape of the hall but renovated it using mostly iron and glass, with fully-glazed walls providing views and access to the glasshouse. The Dunedin house, which featured on Season 8 of Grand Designs New Zealand, has this week been named Winner of the 2026 Biophilic Design Awards in the Interiors and Renovations category. What is biophilic design?

According to the Victorian Health Building Authority, biophilic design is about integrating nature into our buildings to enhance wellbeing. It takes into account light, air, water, plants, natural landscapes and native wildlife.

More than simply adding greenery to a room, biophilic design recognises that natural patterns, materials, sounds, smells and light can all contribute to feeling good.
