Housing infrastructure spend welcomed

As always, the Federal Government’s budget this week received disparate responses, but some measures have been welcomed by housing industry bodies.

UDIA National said the investment recognises the essential role infrastructure plays in accelerating housing delivery, including roads, water, sewerage, power and community services that are necessary before homes can be constructed.

Not just more, better

As Australia works to accelerate housing delivery, the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) this week urged governments to ensure new homes are not just faster to build, but better to live in.

Easy lighting for hard places

Are there spots around your home that are always dark and gloomy, or do you sometimes wish you had better lighting in closets or cupboards? Rechargeable under-cabinet lights might be the answer.

Available online or from many retailers, the lights are easy to install, provide additional, discrete task lighting and can optionally be motion-sensitive, making them handy for navigating steps in the dark.

Great place to live longer

People everywhere are generally living longer, but Europe and Australia have been found to offer the best chance of living to 100.

Demographics analysts World Depopulation recently examined 100 cities around the world, ranking them for quality of life and environment, life expectancy, smoking rates, obesity levels, food quality and safety standards, and physical inactivity for adults over the age of 70.

The Norwegian city of Bergen came out on top, closely followed by Canberra, which ranked second overall in quality of life with a national life expectancy of 84.34 years.
