Values heating up

Home values around the country have reversed their recent trend and are now on the rise again, according to new figures released this week by Cotality (formerly Corelogic).

The latest Australian dwelling values rose another 0.5 per cent in May, taking the national index 1.7 per cent higher over the first five months of the year.

Check smoke alarms now

As the cold weather settles in around us, homeowners are being reminded to check smoke alarms to make sure they’re installed properly and working.

Check the battery on your smoke alarm by pressing the test button (if you can’t reach it, use a broom handle). Batteries should be replaced once a year and the alarm itself must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-1993.

According to the MFB, if you don’t have a working smoke alarm installed in your home and a fire occurs, you’re 57 per cent more likely to suffer property loss and damage. So get checking now!

Value of work done lifts

The value of new home building rose in the March quarter, according to data released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The figures show that the value of construction completed on new homes increased 1.6 per cent over the period, 7 per cent higher than at the same time last year.
