House approvals rise again in June

Building approvals for houses have risen for six months in a row, according to data released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

ABS Building Approvals figures show that the total number of private sector house approvals rose 1.0 per cent in trend terms in June.

Approvals dropped by 1.5 per cent in the more volatile multi-unit sector, however, bringing the total number of dwelling units approved to just 0.1 per cent increase in the month.

Dwelling approvals increased in the Australian Capital Territory (2.7 per cent), Western Australia (1.8 per cent), New South Wales (1.0 per cent), Tasmania (0.9 per cent), South Australia (0.8 per cent) and Queensland (0.1 per cent) but decreased in the Northern Territory (down by 10.9 per cent) and Victoria (1.2 per cent).

In trend terms, approvals for private sector houses increased for the six consecutive month in June. Of the states and territories, South Australia (2.6 per cent), Western Australia (1.5 per cent), New South Wales (1.0 per cent) Victoria (0.9 per cent) and Queensland (0.6 per cent) all experienced rises in private sector house approvals.

The value of residential building approved rose 0.4 per cent in June following rises in the previous 16 months.
