House prices up again

House prices continued to show improvement in the March quarter, according to data released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Preliminary estimates show that established house prices across the eight capital cities rose 0.1 per cent in the March quarter 2013.

Prices rose in Perth (up 1.2 per cent), Melbourne (0.2 per cent), Darwin (1.9 per cent) and Canberra (0.2 per cent) and fell in Brisbane (down 0.3 per cent), Adelaide (0.1 per cent) and Hobart (0.3 per cent). Sydney showed no movement for the quarter.

Annually, prices have risen 2.6 per cent in the year to the March quarter 2013. Darwin recorded the highest change at 8.0 per cent, followed by Perth (up 6.1 per cent), Sydney (3.6 per cent), Canberra (1.5 per cent), Brisbane (1.4 per cent), Melbourne (1.1 per cent) and Adelaide (0.9 per cent). Hobart was the only capital city to report a drop in house prices (down 1.9 per cent).
