EV batteries turn to fertiliser

With more Australian homes than ever boasting at least one electric vehicle, it’s good to see that researchers have developed a way to recycle old EV batteries into crop and plant fertilisers.

Engineers at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee used resin to replace the lithium ions with hydrogen or potassium ions, allowing more than 90 percent of the lithium to be recovered efficiently for re-use in new batteries, while the leftover solution contains phosphorus and other elements that can be used in fertilisers.
