House prices still rising: ABS

House prices around the country have risen consistently over the past twelve months, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) announced this week.

The latest figures show that the average price for houses in the eight capital cities increased 1.9 per cent in the September 2013 quarter, for a total rise of 7.6 per cent over the last year.

The largest boost was recorded in Sydney, where established house prices rose 3.6 per cent.

Other increases were in Melbourne (up 1.9 per cent), Brisbane (1.2 per cent), Perth (0.2 per cent), Hobart (1.4 per cent) and Darwin (0.4 per cent). Falls were recorded in Canberra (down 1.2 per cent) and Adelaide (0.6 per cent).

"This is the first time since 2010 that the capital city average has shown four consecutive quarters of growth year on year," said ABS spokesperson Robin Ashburn.

Over the September 2013 quarter, the average price of new/project houses increased in Sydney (up 1.8 per cent), Perth (1.5 per cent), Darwin (0.6 per cent), Adelaide and Hobart (0.2 per cent respectively) but fell slightly in Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.
