Jump on trampoline safety

Trampolines have come a long way since the days when they offered no protection from falls, scratches or even broken bones, yet parents are still being warned to be aware of safety issues.

Thousands of trampoline-related injuries are reported each year in Australia, according to ACCC Product Safety.

Maintaining a safe trampoline and using child safe practices can substantially reduce injury to children. Here are some safety tips:

- examine the stand and mat for damage and ensure the springs are still intact and securely attached at both ends. 

- always use safety padding on the frame and regularly check for holes and general wear and tear. 

- ensure all leg braces are locked and the frame is not bent. 

- check for clear space overhead and around the trampoline to avoid children jumping into objects like clotheslines, trees, fences and wires. 

- cover at least 2.5 metres of ground surrounding the trampoline with a thick layer of soft, impact-absorbing material such as pine bark and woodchips. 

- supervise use and only have one child jumping at a time. 

- be aware of the safety features to look for when buying play equipment and ensure it complies with Australian safety standards.

Most trampolines sit in the yard exposed to harsh conditions such as strong sunlight and rain, so it’s important to check regularly for any safety issues - don’t let yours spring a nasty surprise.
