Save energy, save costs

Once considered a cheap and efficient form of energy, natural gas has lost its lustre over the past few years.

Rulings this week have meant that natural gas appliances will no longer be built into new homes in Sydney from next year, while in Victoria gas hot water systems will be phased out of Victorian homes. The ACT banned new connections in 2022.

Electricity costs are also unlikely to go down, so unless you can go off the grid altogether, you may well be looking for other practical ways to make a difference.

Here are some simple changes you and the family can make in your daily life to reduce energy expenditure.

Change habits:
- Turn off lights when you leave a room
- Switch off and unplug appliances that are not in use
- Only use heating and cooling when and where needed; close off doors to unoccupied rooms
- Turn the gas hot water service to vacation mode if you're away for a few days
- Dress for the weather and set your heating thermostat at 18°-20°C; every degree less will save about 10 per cent on your heating bill
- Fill the washing machine and dishwasher before running
- Wash clothes in cold water where possible, and dry on a line or rack
- Check that the seals on your refrigerator are intact and defrost as necessary
- Compare star ratings when buying appliances - the more stars, the lower the running costs

Change your home:
- Install low-energy lighting such as LED lights where possible
- Install ceiling fans to reduce the need for air conditioning
- Insulate hot water pipes and tanks to reduce heat loss
- Weather-proof external doors using draught stoppers or 'door snakes' at the bottom and weather stripping around the frame, and seal up any gaps and cracks in external walls, floors and the ceiling to keep heat inside during winter
- Make sure the ceiling is adequately insulated and install thick curtains with a boxed pelmet to manage heat loss or gain through windows
- Use shutters and/or install awnings to block out the summer sun

When replacing your gas hot water system, consider installing a solar hot water system. Government rebates may be available for eligible households.
