How many birds in your backyard?

Whether you’re an avid bird watcher or just enjoy seeing them around your home, you might like to take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count - BirdLife Australia’s first nationwide bird survey.

Sometime during the week 20-26 October, note down how many birds you see in 20 minutes in your backyard or favourite park, beach, forest or paddock.

To participate, download the Aussie Backyard Bird Count app from the iTunes App or Google Play stores. When you submit your list you’ll be able to see live statistics on how many people are taking part, and the number of birds and species seen near you and right across Australia. So far there have been 33,049 birds sighted – an increase of 20,000 in just one week.

Home staging 101.1

To make a small space appear larger, remove any ‘extra’ furniture leaving only the pieces that are needed to define the room. Make sure there are ‘pathways’ through the room: if viewers have to squeeze round furniture the room will feel even smaller.

Furniture can also be used make a large room appear cosier. Arrange bookcases, couches and plants to distinguish between the dining and living areas in an open plan room, but avoid placing chairs or couches with their backs to the entry way.

This old house

In Australia we tend to think of an old home as having been built around World War I. Imagine being able to buy and live in one that was built before the Normans conquered England!

The 3-bedroom property currently listed by UK agents Bedfords for £499,950 is within the walls of an ancient abbey in Suffolk. Construction began on the abbey in 1020 and the section with the house was completed two hundred years later.
